A very special island is inhabited only by knights and knaves. Knights always tell the truth, and knaves always lie. You meet four inhabitants: Sue, Alice, Homer and Ted. Sue tells you that Alice is a knave. Alice tells you that Ted is a knave. Homer claims, `Alice is a knight and Ted is a knave.' Ted tells you,... `I and Homer are different.'

So who is a knight and who is a knave?

Assumption 1:

We assume Sue is a knave. This means Alice is a knight because the statement 'Alice is a knave' is definitely wrong. Therefore the statement 'Ted is a knave' is right because Alice is a knight. Then, Homer can also be assumed as a knight because the statement `Alice is a knight and Ted is a knave' is right. The problem is with the fourth statement. If Ted is a knave, the statement `I and Homer are different' is wrong, and the correct statement is `I and Homer are not different' or 'I and Homer are the same'. And this means, if Ted is a knave, Homer must also be a knave, thus the statement `Alice is a knight and Ted is a knave' is wrong, rendering the fist and second statement invalid. The conclusion is assumption 1 cannot be accepted.

Assumption 2:

We assume Sue is a knight. This means Alice is a knave because the statement 'Alice is a knave' is definitely right. Therefore the statement 'Ted is a knave' is wrong because Alice is a knave, thus Ted is a knight. Then, Homer can also be assumed as a knave because the statement `Alice is a knight and Ted is a knave' is wrong. The fourth statement, `I and Homer are different' is right if Ted is a knight, and it conforms to the situation if Ted is a knight dan Homer is a knave. The conclusion is assumption 2 can be accepted.

Therefore the answer is:

Sue and Ted are knights

I occassionally play Scrabble at Facebook. This is one of my most interesting games..... which starts with a bingo (no. 1) and ends with a bingo (no. 4) with a total of 4 bingos in one game. The last move also got me the red square (triple word!) totalling 86 points... not bad for a finishing move. It's a great game. You can choose to make a move in either 5 minutes, 1 day or 1 week, depending on your free time. Just make sure to avoid clicking the 'Force Forfeit' button unless you really need to....

Animated Forum Signature Tutorial - Part 4

After applying animations on objects as explained in tutorial part 3, the next step is to insert hyperlinks and export the movie.

Noticethat one of the text objects in the signature is a link. A hyperlinkcan be put on the object to enable it to be clicked and it will openthe link in a browser window.

Clickon Script as highlighted in the yellow rectangle to open the Scriptpanel. Make sure the object you want the link to be append to isselected, then click on Add Script, and select Browser/Network. ChoosegetURL(...).

Putthe hyperlink in the URL box. Then select the target window. _blank isrecommended as this will open the link in a new browser window. Theresulting script will be shown in the Script panel. The link can now beclicked.

Clickon the Play Movie button to preview the whole movie from the beginningto the end. This is how the animated signature will appear.

Youcan also insert some shapes in the signature by using the Toolsavailable in the left side of the Layout panel. Change the orders bymoving them either upwards or downwards in the Outline panel. Now it isthe time to export the movie.

Clickon File, and select Export. There are many formats available forexporting the movie. Choose either you want the signature in swf or gifformat. What is the difference between swf and gif signature? Well, swfor flash signature enables you to put multiple links in one signature,plus other functions such as stop and replay. While animated gif doesnot provide these functions. You can only put one link with animatedgifs. However, not all forums provide the support to put flashsignature for the users.

TheExport Settings window will appear after choosing the preferred format.Click on OK to export the movie. The animated signature is nowfinished. Click on the links to view the results:

Animated Forum Signature Tutorial - Part 3

After inserting the text and animation as explained in tutorial part 2, the next step is to apply animations to the objects in the signature.

In this part, the most important panel is the Timeline panel as highlighted in the yellow rectangle. You can resize the height of the Timeline panel by dragging the lower border to your desired height.

Select the object you want to apply the animation to. For this tutorial, only the texts will be animated, because the imported animation is already.... well, animated. Notice that there are two text objects there. When one is selected, the corresponding text row in the Timeline panel will also be highlighted.

In this image, the yellow and pink rectangles show the corresponding Timeline rows to the objects, which are arranged in order. You can try changing the order of the object and the Timeline row will follow. Change the Timeline panel height to ensure all the rows are visible.

To apply the animation, select which frame you want the animation to start playing on the selected Timeline row. For this tutorial, frame 6 is selected, which means that the animation will start playing on frame 6. Right click on frame 6 and the effects menu will appear. To start the animation, select Appear into position as highlighted in the yellow rectangle.

These are the effects available in the Appear into position menu. Choose whichever you want. For this tutorial, the effect Implode up slowly is selected.

Click the Play Effect button as highlighted in the yellow rectangle to preview the animation applied on the text.You can adjust the length of the effect by dragging the right side of the effect rectangle. The next step is to insert the effect that will end the animation on the object.

Right click on the frame where you want to end the animation. Spare some frames in between to allow the object to appear static on the signature (in case of text, to allow the text to be read). The effects menu will appear. Select Disappear from position as highlighted in the yellow rectangle. Choose whichever exit animation you want.

Preview the animation by clicking the Play Effect button. Adjust the effect to the desired length.

Repeat the steps on the other objects. Notice that the imported animation (the eagle in this case) will appear from the start of the movie to the end because no entry or exit effects are applied on it. Try experimenting with other effects such Fade, Zoom, Slide, Looping continuously et cetera until you are satisfied with the result. The next step is to insert hyperlinks and export the movie.

Animated Forum Signature Tutorial - Part 2

The background image for the forum signature has already been displayed as explained in tutorial part 1. The next step is to insert text and animations in the signature.

Click on the Text Tool button as highlighted with the yellow rectangle. Bring your mouse cursor onto the layout panel and click on the spot where you want the text to go and hold your mouse button.

Drag the text box to the appropriate width depending on how long the text will be.

You can change the font color by going to the text properties panel on the right side. The yellow rectangle shows the button for changing the font color.

To insert the text, put your mouse cursor in the text box, and type in the text you want to appear in the signature. Don't worry about the excessive space yet. It is recommended that you leave quite a bit of space in case you want to change the font type.

To change the font type, highlight the text and click on the font type dropdown menu in the text properties panel. You can preview the font by hovering your mouse cursor over each type and it will appear on the left side. Choose your preferred font.

The text box can be resized by dragging the right side of the box to the appropriate size. Make sure that the mouse cursor changed to a double-pointed arrow. Leave the text aside for now. The next step is to insert an animation in to the signature.

Click on the Import Animation button as highlighted in the yellow rectangle. The insert animation window will appear. The types of animation files that can be inserted into the signature are swi, swf, exe and gif as shown in the image. This tutorial will make use of a gif file. Choose the animation file that you want to insert and click Open.

There are many options shown in the Import window. You can try playing with the options, but it's best to leave it be. Make sure all frames are selected. Click on Import to insert the animation into the signature. Then move or resize the animation until it fits in with the signature.

You can insert additional text or anything else you want in the signature before moving to the next step. The next step is apply animations to the objects in the signature.

Animated Forum Signature Tutorial - Part 1

Graphical signatures are commonly used by online forumers at the end of their posts in online discussion forums. Most signatures are static picture signatures that usually carry their nicknames and their websites or blogs and such. There are also animated signatures which come in gif format or swf format if allowed in the forum. This tutorial will provide a way to create a simple animated signature with moving texts and pictures. There is only one type of software used in this tutorial, which is Swish Max 2. The trial version of the software can be downloaded from this site:

After installing the Swish Max 2 software, open the software and the following window will appear:

This is the default window setting of the software. The layout panel shows the common size used to create a flash (swf) presentation. However, this size is not suitable for creating an animated forum signature. Therefore, the layout panel has to be resized to suitable dimensions. the first step is to edit the movie properties as shown below:
The yellow rectangles show where to click and what to edit. The height and width of the movie need to be the same with the background picture used for the signature. For this tutorial, the following background picture will be used:

The dimensions (height and width) of the background picture is shown in the yellow box. Use the dimensions to edit the movie properties of the signature.

After modifying the width and height of the movie according to the dimension of the picture, click on OK and the layout panel will be resized to the appropriate dimension as shown below:

The following step is to insert the image into the movie.

Click on the Insert Image button as highlighted in the yellow rectangle. The insert image window will appear. The left side of the window shows the default installation folder of SwishMax 2, while the right side shows the place for previewing the image.

Browse to the folder where the picture is saved. In this example, the My Documents folder is used. Select the picture and it will be previewed on the right side of the window. Then click on Open.

The background image will be displayed in the layout panel. The next step is to insert texts and animations in the signature.

Protecting folders with Windows XP Professional

There is one simple way to protect your folders in computers using Windows XP Professional. Usually one uses a software to protect his files or folders from being accessed by another, however this method does not require you to use any softwares to do so. Thus it can save your money and also protect your privacy.

This tutorial is intended for lone computers which are not connected to any local area network which are used by many people. This can only be done by users with administrative privilege, of course. The very first step to be done is to create a password for the administrator account. This step can be performed by clicking the 'Start' button, and then go to 'Control Panel'. In the Control Panel, select 'User Accounts'. In the User Accounts, select the administrator account or whatever account with administrative privilege that you use, and then select 'Create a password'.

After creating a password for the administrator account, make a new account for use by other people aside from you, the owner. Go to User Accounts again, and select 'Create a new account'. Type the name for the account, in this example, I will use 'Others'. Click on next and select the 'Limited' account type instead of administrator. Then click on 'Create account'. A new account for use by other people will then be ready.

The next step is to change the security setting for the folders. Firstly, open 'My Computer'. Then on the menu bar, select 'Tools', and then 'Folder Options'. In the Folder Options window, select 'View' tab and scroll down to the bottom until you see an item 'Use simple file sharing (Recommended)'. By default, this item is ticked. Untick the item and click OK.

And now it is time to make your folder private. Browse to where the folder you want to protect is. Then right click on the folder and select 'Properties'. In the Properties window, select 'Security' tab and you will see the list of users of the computer. Click on 'Advance'. If you do not see the limited account you have created before, click on 'Add'. The 'Select User or Group' window will appear. The click on 'Advance'. A new 'Select User or Group' window will appear. Click on 'Find Now', and search for the name of the limited account. It is placed in the 'Name (RDN)' column, and the right column is the computer name. Then click on OK, and the limited account will appear such as this 'COMPUTERNAME\Others'. Click OK and the window 'Permission Entry for 'folder_name'' will appear.

In the Permission Entry for 'folder_name' window, you will be able to change the security settings of the folder for the limited account. Go to the 'Deny' column, and tick the 'List Folder/Read Data' and 'Delete' items. Then tick the bottom item 'Apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only'. Then click OK. In the 'Advance Security Settings for 'folder_name'' window, click on OK and a security alert will appear. Just click Yes. Then click OK for the Properties window. The folder will now be private and cannot be accessed by the limited account users. This method can only be performed using the administrative account, and cannot be done using the limited account.

Monopoly Here and Now

These are screencaps from the game Monopoly Here and Now Edition.

The first image is the result of my first game against three computer opponents of the Entrepreneur level, and the second image is the result of my first game against a computer opponent of the Tycoon level. The most efficient strategy for playing Monopoly Here and Now against a computer is to acquire at least one land for every color to avoid monopoly by the computer before starting on building houses or hotels by every mean possible, such as by using trade if the computer has already gained two land of the same color. Also, never accept the trade offered by the computer. Afterwards, the win can slowly be obtained through collecting money from salary and offering trades to the computer to gain the land deeds. The first image shows my largest win so far by using this method.

rmvb with subtitles

There are two ways to watch rmvb files along with subtitle files such as .srt or .sub. The first method is to use a media player that can play rmvb files and load subtitle files. An example of such a media player is SMPlayer which can play most of video file types including rmvb and flv. SMPlayer can be downloaded from this site:

SMPlayer also comes with a portable version which does not require installation. SMPlayer Portable can be downloaded from the above site or here.

The second method is to embed the subtitle within the video itself. If you've got an avi file with srt subtitle, you can use Easy Realmedia Tools to convert the avi file to rmvb file by including the subtitle within it. Rmvb file size is usually much smaller than avi file size therefore it can also save disk space.

Gilligan's Island

This is the best that I managed to do with the game called The Real Gilligan's Island. I got this game from my brother and it came within an xls file, therefore you need a Microsoft Excel in order to be able to play it. The game can be downloaded from here if you're interested.

Master of Defense

These pictures are screencaps from the game Master of Defense in which towers are built in order to defend citizens from monsters trying to invade the city. The towers can be upgraded from time to time to increase its shooting power and range by spending points gained from shooting as many monsters as possible and as least victims as possible. This is an interesting game as you get to arrange the towers in various ways to get the most advantageous positioning in order to successfully eliminate all passing monsters. Less towers built but still sufficiently eliminating all the monsters will leave you with more points remaining which will contribute to higher marks. The most useful tactic to gain higher mark is to identify what kind of monsters will appear at the end of each stage whether it is flying or walking, and to sell all towers that do not have any effects on the last monsters, which are generally stronger than the precedents and somewhat like the boss of the stage. There are four types of towers; ground-shooting, air-shooting, both ground and air-shooting and also ice tower which freezes the monsters in place for a while. The ice tower is highly useful especially against the last monster if fully upgraded.

The most important aspect in a Scrabble game is not to make bombastic words but simple words that can generate the most points possible.

My most memorable moment in a Scrabble official match is when I was lucky enough to make the word 'PRELUDE' on my first move, which was also the first move of the game. Of course, aside from getting the double word bonus, I also gained additional 50 points from using all the tiles on that move.

Modified skin

This is a modified Windows XP skin or theme that I created by using SkinStudio Professional. The theme is loaded by using WindowBlinds. A bit slow on the loading, though, because of the pictures. The top robot used to be bigger, but I resized it because it interfered with the Start panel and made it slower to appear.

Minesweeper
